The largest reserve in Southern Africa, the remote Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the perfect place to escape and appreciate the solitude of the desert landscape. Despite the harsh environment, there are many animal species that survive here, including the mighty black-maned Kalahari lion and a large population of cheetah. The Central Kalahari is also home to the Baswara San Bushmen tribe, who you can join on an interpretive walk as they forage for food. As you would expect of such an isolated location, the star-gazing opportunities are phenomenal, especially when sleeping out under the desert sky.

Highlights+
Game Drives and Wildlife

The vast desert of the Central Kalahari is home to a variety of wildlife. The open landscape is ideal hunting territory for cheetah, while large black-maned Kalahari lion can often be seen stalking gemsbok and springbok. The reserve is also home to several packs of critically endangered wild dog. What’s more, some 220 bird species have been identified here. Game drives explore the vast wilderness, whilst a guided walk gives an insight into the smaller species and eco-systems, showing how much life there really is in what initially seems a barren environment.

Walking with the San Bushmen

A stay in the Central Kalahari isn’t just about the wildlife. Learn about the fascinating culture of the local Baswara San Bushmen on an interactive walk, joining them to explore the area, as they explain their beliefs, way of life and how they forage for food in this remote and harsh environment.

Climate+

During the summer rains (December to April) the desert bursts into life with antelope grazing on the fresh shoots. In winter (May to October), the dry desert allows for easier sightings of smaller mammals.

Health+

Health facilities, hygiene and disease risks vary worldwide and you should take health advice about your specific needs from your general practitioner or a specialist clinic as early as possible before travel. For information about Zika, other mosquito-borne diseases (such as Dengue fever and Chikungunya), Lyme Disease (caused by tick bites), and to receive advice on mosquito bite avoidance measures, please visit Insect and tick bite avoidance. In addition, we highly recommend that you seek specialist advice from your doctor and, where recommended, obtain vaccinations or tablets for protection against, for example: Malaria, Hepatitis A, Polio and Typhoid. In some cases, treatments for Malaria should begin well in advance of travel. Travellers may also be required to show Yellow Fever Certificates on arrival in certain destinations ie, some African countries. Please note that you are strongly advised against scuba-diving for 24 hours before travelling by air. We would also like to draw your attention to the risk of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and recommend that you consult with your doctor before travelling.
