Luxury Holidays At The Inn At English Harbour

The Inn at English Harbour is set amongst nineteen acres of lush, manicured gardens on a stretch of white-sand beach, its pretty wooded headland overlooking Nelson’s Dockyard, the former British Navy base of Admiral Horatio Nelson. The naval activity is now long gone and in its place a constant stream of super yachts motor at the marina and a laid-back utopia presides. Visitors are required to do little more than relax and you couldn't find a more perfect place to do this  than at The Inn at English Harbour. Luxurious guest rooms and suites each boast a private veranda or terrace, flat-screen television, an iPod docking station, internet access and décor in neutral tones. The two beachfront cabanas provide classic accommodation just steps from the waters edge, with the selection of land and water-based sport activities providing guests with the option of being as active or relaxed as they wish to be.

Culture & History

A trip to Nelson's Dockyard is also worth a visit; so called because in the 18th and 19th century the dock was used as the repair station for British ships and was therefore inhabited by many Naval officers, including the acclaimed Admiral Nelson. Today, the vicinity had been transformed into a restored Georgian tourist attraction, housing the Naval Yard Museum which was formerly the Naval Officers House (Nelson included), and various charming shops and restaurants. A complimentary water taxi is available to transport guests into English Harbour and the surrounding coastline on a fixed timetable. Currently, guests do not have to pay to visit Nelson's Dockyard National Park, however, should you leave to visit shops and restaurants outside of the historic dockyard area, there may be a fee to re-enter when returning to the point from which the water taxi operates.

In Addition

The hotel couldn't be better located in Antigua during sailing week –  at the end of every day's racing every yacht that has taken part, salutes the hotel guests either by all the crew on deck waving, or all the crew on deck and the firing of a cannon.

A water taxi is available to transport guests into English Harbour and the surrounding coastline. This operates to a fixed timetable with two sailings each way in the morning and two in the afternoon. Guests should be aware that the Inn at English Harbour is located within Nelson's Dockyard National Park. Currently, guests do not have to pay to visit the national park, however, should they leave to visit shops and restaurants outside of the historic dockyard area, they may be charged a fee to re-enter when returning to the point from which the water taxi operates. We would also like to ask that guests note that The Inn At English Harbour no longer operate an on-request water taxi service.

Sailing and Watersports

Sunny Antigua has become almost synonymous with sailing, boasting a coastline characterized by deeply indented bays and coves that catch the sea breeze. If you’re visiting during the world-renowned Antigua Sailing Week at the end of April, prepare to be awed as impressive gleaming ocean-going yachts gather at English Harbour for a series of challenging races, while back at the dock, a fabulous array of parties, events and ceremonies create an infectious carnival atmosphere. Sailing doesn’t come to a halt when the festivities end though - private yacht charters can be arranged from most of the top hotels on the island, offering exclusive luxury cruises out on the crystal-clear Caribbean waters.

Sailing and Watersports
Sport

Whilst the glorious Caribbean Sea means that a lot of Antigua’s main attractions are water-based, there is still plenty to do back on land. Golfers are very well catered for, with a number of world-class and stunningly scenic courses to choose from. While sailing is on the mind of many who visit Antigua, the country’s national sport is actually cricket, and there is an intense devotion to the game across the island. An echo of British heritage, some of the world’s greatest cricket players hail from Antigua. Big, international matches take place here from January through to July, though you can find local games held throughout the year.

Sport
English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard

First inhabited by Amerindians, it is the following period of colonial British rule that has left the biggest stamp on the culture of Antigua. While today it is a delightful mix of African Caribbean and European influences that make up the eclectic personality of the island, the remains of the 18th Century occupation, led by Horatio Nelson, stand as some of the best-preserved example of colonial architecture in the Caribbean. A must-see for any history enthusiast, English Harbour is where you will find Nelson’s Dockyard, once the home base of Britain’s Leeward Islands naval fleet, and now the world’s only Georgian era dockyard still in use.

Beaches

The saying “life is a beach” is truly the local’s favourite line in Antigua. With a boundless 365 powder-soft white-sand beaches (one for every day of the year, if you please!), you can expect to find the perfect beach for every activity. Admire the peacefully nesting Sea Turtles at Galley Bay, gaze at the distant sight of Monserrat from Fryers Beach or simply kick back and relax on the mile-long sands of Jolly Beach. Delightful and diverse, Antigua’s beach life will never leave you feeling disappointed.
