Safari

Water-based safaris provide a different perspective on the wildlife that can be found along the Chobe River, bordering Namibia and Botswana. Each day, tender boats will take you in search of the wildlife, particularly the vast herds of elephants that can often be seen along the shoreline and splashing in the water amongst hippos and crocodiles. During the drier months, from March to November, many animals gather on the river bank in search of food and water. From September, the migratory birds start to arrive making it the best time for birders. Birding safaris are conducted by tender boat and led by a knowledgeable guide. Open-billed storks, rock pratinacoles and carmine bee-eaters are just some of the 450 bird species that can be seen along the captivating Chobe River.

Hop on a tender boat for an excursion to a local village, located on the flood plains of the East Caprivi in Namibia. This is home to the Subiya tribe who have lived here for over 100 years. Woven baskets and beaded jewellery can be purchased and make great souvenirs, all while helping the villagers to make a living.

Climate

Chobe National Park is a year-round destination with two distinct seasons. The wet season (from December to April) is an excellent time of the year for bird-watchers, while the light is often popular with photographers. The most popular time to visit is from May to November, during the dry season, when animals congregate around the Chobe River. August through to October are the hottest months.

Getting There

Chobe National Park can be reached by road from Kasane Airport (BBK), which can be reached in under two hours by air from Johannesburg. The park can also be accessed by road from Livingstone Airport (LVI) in Zambia and Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe. The best route depends on where in the park you are visiting. Your Luxury Travel Specialist will advise on the ideal travel arrangements for your bespoke itinerary.

Safari

Whilst Chobe National Park is famous for its large concentrations of elephant (the highest density in Africa!) often seen gracing the banks of the mighty Chobe River, there are plenty of other species to look out for on daily game drives with expert rangers. These include - but aren't limited to - lion, leopard, zebra, Cape buffalo, hippo, puku and red lechwe.

Safari
Cruising the Chobe River

A river cruise is an excellent way to safari in the park, with two and three-night cruises aboard the Zambezi Queen inviting you to explore the Chobe River bordering Botswana and Namibia. The changing scenery can be viewed from each of the cabins' private balconies, while you can also hop into the tender boats to explore the wildlife on the shoreline – including huge elephants and various other game. Species along the wildlife-rich waterway include kingfishers, fish eagles and herons, as well as hippos and crocodiles.

Birdwatching

Home to plenty of marshes and floodland, Chobe National Park is excellent for birdwatching, with some 460 species to tick off the checklist. Birds you may spot include half-collared kingfishers, white-backed night herons, African skimmers and much, much more!
