Luxury Beach

Commanding breathtaking views across the Bay of Bengal, The Leela Palace Chennai boasts a prime waterfront location and is the city’s only modern-day palace to face the sea. A wonderful place to watch the sun rise, the beach is a natural extension of the riverbank, the point at which the River Adyar estuary flows into the sea. Ten minutes away is Marina Beach, India’s longest urban strand of golden-sugar sands. The beach is famous for local crowds, festivals and cultural events, food stalls, souvenir shopping, historical attractions, beach cricket, kite-surfing, giant chess and horse-riding – the latter being the best way to experience this legendary 13-kilometre-long beach (swimming prohibited due to strong undercurrents).

Culture & History

Beyond the hotel, there's a wealth of culture to explore, including historic cities, temples and a basilica reputedly built over the tomb of Thomas (Doubting Thomas), one of Christ's twelve disciples. Chennai's recorded history began in Colonial times, with the British East India Company arriving in the 17th century. It established Fort St George in 1644, which subsequently defended the burgeoning surrounding city from French attack, enabling Chennai to become a major naval port by the 18th century. Do visit the ramparts of this fascinating monument, which includes a museum showcasing relics from the city's Colonial past and St Mary's Church, considered the oldest Anglican Church in all of Asia, housing the oldest British tombstones in India in its courtyard. Renowned as being the birthplace of the modern Indian army, the fort is a must-visit for lovers of Colonial British and military history.

Spa Breaks

The brand-new 1,300m2 ESPA Spa (opening soon) is a luxurious two-storey concoction of traditional heritage elegance and modern design, with décor featuring natural wood, hand-carved stone and sumptuous soft furnishings. The luxurious, calming space comprises nine treatment rooms and a couple’s spa suite, along with relaxation rooms, saunas and steam rooms for men and women. Signature treatments perfectly meld scientifically researched European wellness techniques with Ayurvedic therapies designed to harmonise mind, body and spirit. Who could resist the ninety-minute Stress Buster Treatment, combining skin brushing, exfoliation and a hot stone massage, followed by a head massage and gently stretching? Total bliss. Additionally, you’ll find a state-of-the-art fitness studio and gym, along with a large outdoor swimming pool.

Climate

Due to its size, India has several climatic zones. In general, the best time to visit our featured areas is from October to March. The nation has four seasons: winter (December to February), summer (March to May), a monsoon season (June to September) and a post-monsoon period (October to November). The Himalayas region, can experience rain year-round, however the main rainy season lasts from July to October. In Delhi, it is generally dry and hot from March to June, but when the monsoon rains begin in July, temperatures become cooler, however the high humidity can be uncomfortable. Rajasthan, where you will find Jaipur and Udaipur, is very dry and extremely hot from May to July, but even when the monsoon brings light rainfall it doesn’t have much effect on temperatures. The best time to visit southern India is from November to March when temperatures are at their most comfortable and the monsoon rains have subsided. It is best to visit Goa from December to February, when it is hot, but not wet or too humid.

Historic Sites

India holds a vast array of historic gems that are waiting to be discovered. None more so than the Taj Mahal in Agra; a symmetrical masterpiece constructed out of glorious white marble by Shah Jahan as a memorial to his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, following her tragic death during childbirth. Perhaps Delhi’s historic sites will tempt you, especially the Red Fort or Humayun’s Tomb, which predates the Taj Mahal by sixty years and is thought to have inspired the design for the Taj Mahal. Jaipur’s most distinctive landmark, Hawa Mahal, is another extraordinary sight to behold, rising five storeys tall and showcasing a beautiful, pink-painted, honeycomb-effect façade – it will certainly leave you flabbergasted. The beautiful region of Goa is a must-visit, particularly Old Goa, where Basilica of Bom Jesus is situated, or the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Panaji, both of which provide stunning Colonial architecture and Portuguese influence.

Mouthwatering Cuisine

Take your tastebuds on a truly phenomenal culinary trip-of-a-lifetime. India is alive with spices and, with such a diverse repertoire of dishes, your mouth will be watering non-stop. With each region distinct from the last, be prepared for different traditions, preparation techniques and presentation styles – from beautifully marinated meats and thalis (Indian food platters), to exceptional seafood dishes and simple, yet delectable, vegetarian curries.

Bustling Cities

Where India excels is with its magical and enchanting cityscapes. The diversity is remarkable; each city you visit is totally different from the last, from ancient traditions and artistic heritage, to spectacular landscapes and culinary delights. Delhi exacerbates this diversity: experience the contrast between the charming Old Delhi, dating back to the 1600s, to the modern bustling metropolis of New Delhi, with its fascinating Colonial-era parliament buildings. Udaipur, on the other hand, sits on the shores of tranquil Lake Pichola, where the Aravalli Hills stretch as far as the eye can see. It is one of the most romantic locations in India. Visit the enchanting and historic Jaipur to discover India’s most flamboyant state.

Captivating Wildlife

India has some of the most bio diverse regions in the world, hosting four of the world’s thirty-five biodiversity hotspots. It is, therefore, no surprise that India is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife, especially the renowned Bengal Tiger, which can be spotted in the beautiful region of Madhya Pradhesh, the pioneering state for wildlife conservation. Strict hunting regulations and the brilliant Project Tiger rehabilitation programme have brought these majestic animals back from the brink of extinction, thus they can be found here more than anywhere else in the world. Kerala also hosts excellent sanctuaries, including Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, where protected animals thrive, such as leopards, elephants, deer and much more.

Irresistible Beaches

Goa is the land of sun, sea and sand, a blissful retreat from the hustle and bustling streets of India’s major cities. Goa boasts a wonderful laid-back attitude, with a tropical vibe that is infectious to those who visit. Stay at a beachfront resort to experience the pristine sand and the azure of the Arabian Sea. Beautiful golden-sand beaches can be found in Kerala, boasting an exceptional 600-kilometre coastline, perfect for relaxing or enjoying watersports.
