Luxury Holidays At Borgo Egnazia

Occupying part of the narrow heel of Italy’s long boot in Puglia, Borgo Egnazia is located in Savelletri di Fasano, between the brilliant-blue sea and rolling green hills, and within a short drive of interesting local towns such as Lecce and Ostuni. Styled on the region’s traditional Apulian villages, where limestone abounds and elegant, cream-coloured dwellings stand, a range of luxurious guest accommodation can be found in the main hotel, La Corte, with a collection of guest rooms that draws inspiration from a traditional country estate house, each with a stone-furnished bathroom, a balcony with views of the sea or hills and modern amenities. Meanwhile, the Borgo is the heart of the resort and reflects a traditional Italian village, offering typical rustic-style houses, guest rooms and suites set within a quiet location and boasting beautiful, stylish detailing.

In addition, there are a group of luxurious private Le Case at the edge of Borgo village that each offer three bedrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen. During your stay, you can dine on mouthwatering Michelin-star Apulian and Mediterranean cuisine, pamper yourself at the hotel's Vair Spa, play a round of golf on nearby San Domenico Golf Club's links course, enjoy a game of tennis on one of the four outdoor courts, take cookery lessons or rent a bike and head off to explore the spectacular local area - the choice is yours. Meanwhile for youngsters, the Borgo is home to both a wonderful Kids' and Teens Club, ensuring there's something for every guest to enjoy at Borgo Egnazia.

Climate

Puglia boasts a wonderful Mediterranean climate. The spring comes early and is generally warm and sunny, with temperatures rising to the early twenties by the end of April. The summer is long, hot and dry and lasts from the end May through to the end of September. Temperatures typically rise to around the 30°C mark in July and August.

The autumn, remains generally warm with temperatures only really dropping out of the 20s towards the beginning of December. More rain is experienced in the winter months with average temperatures around the 12-15 °C mark.

Getting There

Flight Information
British Airways from London Gatwick to Bari.

Flight Time
From London Gatwick to Bari: 2 hours, 55 minutes.

Cuisine

Puglia produces silky olive oils, sun-dried tomatoes and plenty of pasta too – every Sunday, the ladies of Bari can be seen deftly making orecchiette (small, ear-shaped, pasta). Savour the local fish and seafood dishes, including oysters roasted in olive oil, lemon and garlic, as well as spit-roasted lamb with rosemary, all perfectly paired with wines such as Castel del Monte Rosso, Terra d'Otranto and Bianco di Train. In Cisternino, look out for butchers who offer appetising meat options, including parcels filled with mince, ham and cheese called 'bombette' – a local delicacy and great barbecue ingredient.

Cuisine
Sightseeing

Lecce is a Baroque gem, with a beautiful Old Town of golden-stone architecture overflowing with fancy churches, palazzi and piazzas. Highlights include a Roman amphitheatre, Piazza del Duomo, with its 70-metre-high bell tower, Basilica di Santa Croce with its intricate façade, Il Castello di Carlo V and the Church of Saints Niccolò and Cataldo. The pretty town of Ostuni, meanwhile, is a jumble of whitewashed buildings spread over a hillside, all overlooked by a stunning Gothic cathedral. Browse its narrow streets and stairways, taking in the views at every bend and calling into shops selling regional goodies and keepsakes.

Sightseeing
Valle d'Itria

Discover this sweeping, picturesque area of vineyards and olive groves, punctuated by farmsteads, trulli and lovely old towns. Cisternino’s slender streets wend to elegant piazzas, edged with restaurants and beautiful old buildings, such as the 14th century Church of San Nicola – if you visit in August you’re likely to catch fantastic local festivals. Locorotondo is another pretty town, known for wine production and whitewashed 'cummerse' buildings, their pointed gable roofs more typical of the Baltic region. Alberobello is perhaps the most famous, its historic town centre filled with clusters of trulli – unique to the area, these conical-roofed houses are still inhabited today.

Valle d'Itria
Beaches and Coastline

Ostuni has some protected coastal parks and – about eight kilometres away from the town – are some of Puglia’s best beaches. Other places of interest by the sea include the resort of Oranto with its Old Town area and Polignano a Mare with its cliffs and sea caves.
