Amanjena is the first Aman resort in Africa. The property's design emulates old Moorish pisé (earthen) buildings and Berber villages that cling to the High Atlas Mountains, with its distinctive rose-blush walls mirroring those of the nearby ‘Red City’, Marrakech. Step through the handcrafted double oak doors into an oasis bedecked with palms and vines, colonnaded walkways, marble fountains and glittering glazed tiles. The air-conditioned Pavilions and two-storey Maisons breathe Morocco, but in its 21st century incarnation: glamorous and lavish, with Berber carpets and traditional brass lanterns. All have a mini-bar, CD player, television, DVD player and a twice-daily maid service.

The resort’s thirty-two air-conditioned Pavilions lie beneath their own graceful stuc Venetian domes. The pale peach-coloured walls feature a lustrous tadlekt finish, a treatment originally reserved for waterproofing hammam walls. Under the dome is a king-size bed and a wood-burning fireplace brightens the living area. Other furnishings include a daybed and a desk finished in Moroccan leather, as well as a cherry-wood chair. Ouarzazate green marble finishes the bathroom with its stepped and columned bathtub, twin vanities, soaring mirrors, twin dressing areas and separate shower and toilet. Berber carpets are scattered about the zellij -tiled floors.

Amanjena’s six two-storey, two-bedroom Maisons rise seven metres from floor to ceiling in a variation of the Moroccan town house.

The living area, located on the ground floor, features an arc-cut fireplace, a zellij wall fountain and a small bathroom. The self-contained guest bedroom, with its queen-size bed, bathroom with separate shower and toilet, dressing area and separate courtyard entrance, is also located on this floor. The master suite upstairs features a king-size bed and divan, while the en suite bathroom is defined by marble columns, a domed shower, a pillared green marble bathtub and separate toilet.

Take a stroll through the lakeside trails of Menara Gardens, a tranquil oasis peppered with palms, olives and fruit trees, or wander the paths of the Majorelle Gardens, created in the 1920s by French artist, Jacques Majorelle – a blissful botanical sanctuary dotted with buildings painted an intense shade of cobalt blue (known as Bleu Majorelle) and a wonderful complement to the colours of nature. Alternatively, hone your swing on one of Marrakech’s championship golf courses, including Assoufid, Samanah, PalmGolf, Noria and Royal Golf Marrakech.

Marrakech is the gateway to the Atlas Mountains, an awesome, snow-capped range famous for their majestic splendour. This gloriously formidable backdrop frames a region of emerald-green forests and rich, fertile valleys filled with dates, walnuts and other delicious fruit farms. Choose from various day trips, some including a stop for lunch in a traditional Berber village or atop a plateau for spellbinding views; others focusing on flora and fauna with guided expeditions on mule or foot and others exploring the local markets. For those with a passion for adventure sports, another option is a guided, off-road mountain-biking tour – a truly exciting way to discover the area.

Soak up the vibrant ambience of Djemaa el-Fna, a huge open space heaving with street entertainers – snake-charmers, herbalists, acrobats, storytellers, magicians and musicians beating out repetitive rhythms. Look out for Koutoubia Mosque and its beautiful minaret, dominating the city-line thanks to a law that forbids other old city buildings to rise above a palm tree. Other points of interest include Ali ben Youssef Medersa, a 16th century Koran school and the Musée de Marrakech, an exquisite building showcasing Moroccan and Islamic arts and crafts. Another recommendation is a horse-drawn tour around the old city walls, a six-mile circuit laced with 200-odd towers and twenty ornate gates.
