Luxury Holidays At Bisate Lodge

Located in northern Rwanda and situated next to the stunning Volcanoes National Park, Bisate Lodge (meaning ‘pieces’ of eroded volcano in Kinyarwanda), blends beautifully into the lush mountain landscape. Recently opened, this innovative lodge was born out of a desire to increase the population of the Critically Endangered mountain gorilla, along with promoting high-end ecotourism in Rwanda. Comprising a cluster of just six conically-shaped thatched villas, welcoming a maximum of twelve guests, Wilderness Safaris ‘sophisticated and sustainable fully-inclusive lodge sits in a dramatic natural setting – that of an eroded volcanic cone — providing luxurious interiors with breathtaking vistas from the viewing deck.

Along with affording guests with the incredible opportunity to trek and observe habituated groups of mountain gorillas with expert guides (subject to the purchase of a permit in advance), visitors can also enjoy nature walks, guided birding, tea and coffee tasting, community village visits, tree planting and Golden Monkey Treks (subject to the purchase of permit in advance). As the best location for a holistic gorilla experience in Rwanda, guests can embark on an enriching wildlife-encounter amidst the spectacular backdrop of the brooding Bisoke, Karisimbi and Mikeno volcanoes. Whilst the terrain and trek may be strenuous, the remarkable sight of a mighty Silverback cuts a commanding pose and is guaranteed to reward visitors with an unforgettable experience of a lifetime.

Why Bisate Lodge is so special...

Wildlife Encounters

At the time of making your Bisate Lodge booking, you may purchase a Gorilla permit ($1,500 per adult) that entitles you to join one trek with an expert guide. The Park Headquarters is located within easy driving distance of Bisate Lodge and it is from here that you will join a trek to track and observe one of twelve habituated groups of Mountain Gorillas (taking between one and five hours, with a restricted period of one hour to view the Mountain Gorillas in situ). The permits are strictly limited and are additional to accommodation rates. The rainforest terrain is steep and muddy at high altitude, so you should be prepared for a strenuous hike, adhere to a code of conduct and be over 15 years.

Climate

Rwanda’s high season falls between June and September and then December to February, due to the lack of rain and pleasant temperatures. The rainy seasons fall between February and April and then October to November, though this can often be characterised by quick showers, so the park can certainly be enjoyed year-round and gorilla trekking occurs throughout.

From Kigali, it takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach Volcanoes National Park by road. Helicopter transfers can also be arranged – just ask your Luxury Travel Specialist for more details.

Gorilla Trekking

The main allure to the park and for good reason, the bamboo-covered upper slopes are home to around 300 mountain gorillas, a rare and elusive species that is only found in two places on the planet. Join an expert guide and tracker as you hike through the park in search of these incredible animals (with whom humans share around 98% of their DNA!) learning more about how they live and setting eyes on these gentle giants. Such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity includes certain requirements and rules to ensure the safety of both you and the gorillas, which you will be fully advised of before booking. You must also note that the high-altitude hiking terrain can be steep, muddy and dense – worth it for the indescribable thrill you will feel! Please note: gorilla-viewing permits cost from $1,500 (US) per person and are in high demand. We recommend booking well in advance.

Gorilla Trekking
Golden Monkeys

As well as the gorillas, the Volcanoes National Park's bamboo vegetation also houses a population of golden monkeys, a rare species that is officially listed as endangered. A knowledgeable tracker and guide will take your small group through the jungle in search of these charming, cheeky creatures as they jump between trees.

Golden Monkeys
Dian Fossey's Karisoke Research Camp

Dian Fossey was a primatologist and conservationist best known for her extensive study of mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park, founding the Karisoke Research Centre in Rwanda’s Virunga mountains to protect these endangered creatures. Since her death, her work has continued through the centre, which you can visit while in the park. Learn more about the ongoing research and protection practices of gorillas, as well as exploring the interactive exhibit – featuring Dian Fossey artefacts, casts of gorilla’s nose prints and much more!
