Luxury Holidays At Mombo Camp

Situated on Mombo Island, just off the northern tip of Chief's Island, within the Moremi Game Reserve, Mombo Camp is built under the shade of large trees overlooking a wonderful floodplain teeming with wildlife. Famed for frequent sightings of lions, it provides some of the best big-game-viewing in Botswana and is located in a drier area of the Okavango Delta. Nine spacious and luxurious guest tents, raised two metres above the ground on stilts, offer breathtaking views over the plains and are elegantly and traditionally decorated in a typical prospector style - featuring wooden decked floors inside and out, canopied beds, comfortable sofas, and canvas chairs and wooden bistro tables on the decks, along with private salas each furnished with a day-bed large enough for two. The main living and dining area is under thatch and there is a traditional boma for delicious dinners under the stars.

Large concentrations of game gather in front of the camp - including lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, giraffes and buffaloes - and guests can spend their siesta time watching a variety of animals without even having to leave their private deck to do so. As you would expect of a camp of this calibre, the service here is superb.

Safari At Mombo Camp

Mombo Camp is renowned for being 'The place of plenty' and, arguably, has the best big-game viewing in all of Africa, due to its grassy expanse, which attracts an abundance of incredible wildlife. From Camp Mombo, it is the only place in Botswana to see the 'Big Five' on game-drives that explore the wildlife-rich area, from herbivores - zebra, buffalo, giraffe, impala, elephants and rhinos - to one of Africa's highest density of lion populations, along with leopards; which is where the incredible filming of National Geographic's documentary, 'Eye of the Leopard', took place.

The Okavango Delta is flooded from June through to October, making it one of the best times to visit. This is also the dry season, so the flooded plains become filled with thirsty wildlife. The ‘green’ season months of January to March shouldn’t be excluded as this is when a lot of the young are born, birdlife is in abundance and the camps and lodges are less crowded.

Safari

One of the very best wildlife spotting destinations in Botswana and beyond, the Okavango Delta houses large concentrations of animals on both a permanent and seasonal basis. A myriad of species can be spotted on game drives across the delta – including elephant, hippo, lechwe, wildebeest, giraffe, crocodile, lion, cheetah, leopard, black and white rhinoceros and much, much more. The delta is also home to a huge density of endangered African wild dog.

Mokoro Canoeing

Get closer to nature on a guided glide through the reeds of the Okavango Delta in a traditional dugout canoe known as a mokoro. An expert ‘poler’ guides the vessels silently through the waterways and channels, allowing you to sit back, admire the scenery and spot the delta's wealth of birdlife. To experience a gloriously quiet and calm side to this inland oasis, head out as dawn breaks, navigating a network of water channels as they reflect the morning light. Pass by lions, leopards and Nile crocodiles stalking among the reeds.

Helicopter Flights

Take to the skies for an aerial perspective of the Okavango Delta, looking out for herds of elephant and lechwe splashing through the water below. From the air, the unique and raw beauty of the delta becomes even clearer, comprising a patchwork landscape of islands, plains and lagoons.
