Although belonging to Spain , the Canary Islands are actually closer to the African coastline and this means that Lanzarote enjoys mild temperatures year-round. It is a particularly popular winter sun destination, as the island boasts the lowest temperature difference between summer and winter in the world. Summer temperatures bring the hottest days, when hot, dry air is blown over to the island from the Sahara Desert – however, by the time it crosses the Atlantic Ocean it has been somewhat cooled. There may also be some fog and cloud cover during the summer, but temperatures near sea level generally remain warm. On the north shores there tends to be more wind and rainfall, while the south shores tend to be drier. In the winter there may be short periods of stormy weather and rain. For those who like to swim in the sea, the Atlantic Ocean waters remain quite cool year-round.

Playa Blanca is home to a trio of simply stunning Blue Flag beaches. The main beach is Playa Blanca itself, a popular, family-friendly stretch of soft sands and cool waters. The neighbouring Playa Flamingo is within walking distance of Playa Blanca’s marina and remains something of a hidden gem – don’t be surprised to find local fishermen sourcing the day’s octopus and barracuda from this beach’s fish-filled waters. Also nearby, discover Playa Dorada, or ‘Golden Beach’, a hub of water sports activity for those seeking an adventurous day at sea.

Younger travellers are sure to delight in Lanzarote’s two glorious waterparks. Dino Park is in Playa Blanca and is a small but substantial waterpark, offering a range of rides for adults, alongside specialist children’s slides. The island’s main waterpark, however, is in Costa Tequise on Lanzarote’s east coast, just a forty-minute drive from Playa Blanca. Aqua Park Costa Tequise comprises many slides and pools of different styles, shapes and depths to cater for younger guests and thrill-seeking adults alike.

The marina is home to many excellent eateries and refined restaurants. While there is an extensive range of cuisine on offer, the abundance of local fishing makes seafood a real speciality – don’t miss out! Another must-try is ‘papas arrugadas’, the signature dish of The Canaries that is traditionally served tapas style, as an accompaniment to a main meal. The basic recipe calls for the smallest new potatoes the chef can find, lashings of salt and a rich tomato sauce, but many modern interpretations see this dish served in new and inspiring ways throughout the islands.
