Culture & History

Grand Hotel Portovenere overlooks the charming village of Portovenere, which is also referred to as the ‘Bay of Poets’ thanks to the inspiration it provided to a number of poets and writers. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the village was originally built by the Romans, and was later inhabited by the Byzantines, Lombards, Genovese and many other historic figures. The hotel itself is set in a former 13th Century Convent, giving its guests a true taste of authenticity. It is also ideally located for exploring the famed villages of Cinque Terre, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can take scenic walks and wander the enchanting streets dating back centuries ago.

Cinque Terre has a warm Mediterranean climate with sunny summers reaching up to 30°C in July and August. To make the most of walking, the slightly more temperate month of May is perfect, though March onwards and September still has pleasant weather for enjoying walks. It is slightly chillier between October and February when there is also increased chance of rainfall.
