Luxury Holidays At Ol Pejeta Bush Camp

Perched on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in the foothills of the Aberdares and offering incredible views across to Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta is an authentic bush camp with just six tents. Full of character, the camp takes you back to a bygone era, offering a traditional safari experience with hot water bucket showers in the en suite bathroom and meals served in the central mess tent. This eco-friendly haven uses solar energy and generators to power the camp, while batteries are available to charge your cameras so that you can capture the wildlife on your unforgettable morning, afternoon or night game drives. Between game drives, relax on your private veranda and watch the animals as they potter down to the river bank.

Hearty, homemade and delicious, the cuisine at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp uses organic ingredients from local ranches and farms. Breakfast at the camp includes local specialities and freshly-baked bread, while picnic breakfasts can be enjoyed during your early-morning game drive. Lunch includes a selection of salads, pastas and fresh fruit, before canapés served with drinks around the campfire before dinner. Dinner often features organic meat from Ol Pejeta Ranch, followed by mouthwatering homemade desserts.

Climate

In Laikipia, the altitude varies dramatically and temperatures fall by about 6.5°C for every 1,000m you climb. As a result, climatic variations exist within the region. Due to its proximity to the equator, temperatures do not vary much around the year. Daytime temperatures hover around the mid to high twenties, while nights and early mornings can be notably cooler. Two wet seasons occur per year - the 'Short Rains' fall between October and November, while the 'Long Rains' occur between March and May. April is the wettest month. June to September are considered the dry months, characterised by mostly sunny days and cold night time temperatures.

Getting There

Each of the reserves in Laikipia County feature airstrips, allowing for scheduled or private charter flights from Nairobi and other Kenyan regions. The parks can also be reached by road. Your Luxury Travel Specialist will advise the best way to reach the park, depending on where you visit on your bespoke journey of Kenya.

Wildlife Encounters

As well as visiting the rhino and chimpanzee projects, you can join expert trackers on morning, afternoon and evening game drives to go in search of elephant, leopard, cheetah, lion, black-backed jackal, spotted hyena and African wild dogs. Ol Pejeta is a bird-watcher's paradise with some 500 species recorded - including the migrant species from Europe and North Africa that visit the area from November to April.

Wildlife Encounters
Tracking Lions

Lions are becoming more vulnerable here, and you can learn more about the importance of protecting them by joining the Ol Pejeta researchers. Using specialist equipment, the collared lions are tracked, monitored and the data sent to the Ecological Department. Learn how to identify each individual by their whisker patterns, as well as uncovering how old they are by the colour of their nose. The data gathered is vital to protect them for future generations.

Tracking Lions
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Established by the Jane Goodall Institute and the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary provides a safe haven for orphaned and abandoned chimpanzees. Their natural large enclosure gives them a chance to socialise and interact as they are nursed back to health after their traumatic past. You can meet some of the 39 occupants, watch them feed and learn about this ultra-important conservation project.
