Luxury Holidays At Hoanib Skeleton Coast

Positioned on the edge of the transient Hoanib River, in one of the most remote areas of the Kaokoveld, with access to both the haunting loveliness of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast and the Palmwag Reserve’s game-viewing territory, the Hoanib Skeleton Coast Lodge is ideal for the modern adventurer or photographer in search of evocative landscapes and unusual wildlife - the area is home to over 98% of the world's population of rare black rhino. Hoanib Lodge’s seven twin tents and one family tent, blend effortlessly with the stark landscape, their decidedly minimalist décor a perfect reflection of the location. Accessible only by light-aircraft, a longer stay is recommended to obtain the most satisfaction from your stay which includes game drives onto the previously inaccessible Hoanib floodplains, guided walks and scenic flights, and explorations of the Skeleton Coast, a vast surreal wilderness home to shipwrecks and bleached whale skeletons.

Climate

Namibia enjoys an average, three-hundred days of sunshine a year. Whilst the winter months (from July to September) are cooler and the most popular time to visit is generally between April and June, it's worth bearing in mind that during the summer (from November to February) the country bursts into life with vibrant floral displays and many wildlife and bird species giving birth to their young during this time. Rainfall isn’t as much of a concern as you might think, and with fewer travellers you'll often enjoy more intimate experiences.

Picture a swathe of rolling sand dunes glowing red at sunrise and plunging down to the coast; picture vast scoops of wilderness dotted with lush oases, ancient valleys and gigantic clay pans. Add a scattering of striking green mountains, rushing rivers, wetlands and regions almost lifted from space with their peculiar, lunar-like settings. The result? Sheer natural beauty that is truly unparalleled.

Wildlife

Namibia’s remote setting is home to vast conservation areas filled with wildlife, where species such as giraffe, gemsbok, springbok, elephant and lion are all perfectly adapted to desert life. The region also showcases fantastic birdlife - Benguela Long-Billed Larks, Jaegers and Skuas are just a few species in the feathered community. Unforgettable outings include the opportunity to track Black Rhino on foot, as well as a scenic flight along the wild and wonderful Skeleton Coast, stretching as far as the eye can see. Along its stark shores, colossal colonies of Cape Fur Seals huddle for warmth, while, offshore, shipwrecks are a poignant reminder of the area’s harsh marine history.

Wildlife
Adventure

Expect top-class adventures to rival Africa’s best. Join guided eco-treks on foot, jeep or quad bike and explore Namibia’s mesmerising dune landscapes. Meet some of the world’s last nomadic people, the intriguing Himba tribe, and learn all about their traditions and culture. Climb ‘Big Daddy’, the showpiece of Sossusvlei, soaring 300m skywards from a red sand valley. Impress friends at home and capture a sunrise shot of Dead Vlei, a huge clay pan ringed with blazing red dunes, offset by brilliant blue skies and golden rays. Round off an adventure-filled day by dining beneath the stars – Namibia’s clear skies are famous for showcasing nature’s finest cosmic diamonds.
