Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train, Peru has the distinction of being South America's first luxury sleeper train, allowing guests wishing to explore the incredible Peruvian landscapes a more immersive adventure, covering more remote terrain in luxury and style, including along one of the world's loftiest train routes. Each of the four journeys on offer starts or concludes in Cuzco, a fabulous cosmopolitan city that is a must-visit on any trip to Peru, and includes excursions such as visits to ancient Incan settlements, the world-famous Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon, home of the majestic Andean Condor, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Arequipa, known as the 'White City'. On board the train, a refined experience can be enjoyed by up to 48 passengers per journey, who have a choice of four standards of guest cabin, all with en suite facilities. The newly renovated train is beautifully decorated in a contemporary style throughout, peppered with Peruvian design accents that really give the train a sense of place. Andean Explorer journeys run once a week for eleven months of the year – journeys are unavailable throughout February.

Culture & History

Andean Explorer traverses some of the most fascinating regions of Peru, and visits some of its most historic and culturally significant locations. Cuzco is, perhaps, the most cosmopolitan and diverse of Peru's cities, featuring beautifully ornate Spanish Colonial buildings, Incan ruins and terraces, galleries and contemporary restaurants that attract younger travellers in search of an adventure that is both trendy and culturally enriching. Lake Titicaca is the largest expanse of water in South America, featuring an archipelago of floating islands, while Puno, next to the lake, is charming and reputedly has the best bars in Peru. Of course, Peru is also known for its centuries-old Incan culture and there are lots of fascinating archaeological sites that are worthy of exploration, including Raqch'i.

The cuisine-of-the-moment is most definitely Peruvian, and travellers to Peru can experience the confluence of influences that inspire the tasty, fusion-style, dishes, including Italian, Spanish, African and Asian. This fascinating fusion combines pasta, hearty stews and marinated barbecued meats, including Cuy (commonly known as guinea pig). Potatoes, avocados and ceviche are the nation's most synonymous culinary offerings, while Pisco Sours cover off the national drink, mixing Pisco, egg white, syrup, Angostura bitters and lemon juice over ice.

Each features a double bed, seating area furnished with two armchairs and a table, plus a spacious en suite bathroom. Decor is modern and has flourishes of Peruvian influenced design, resulting in a perfectly modern, private space for chilling out and sleeping.

These roomy cabins are amongst the largest accommodation available on board the Belmond Andean Explorer and are exactly the same size as a Deluxe Double Bed Cabin, but with a slightly smaller en suite bathroom and larger lounge area. Each cabin has a double bed, seating area with two comfortable armchairs and a table. The decor is fresh, contemporary and has accents of Peruvian-influenced design, resulting in comfortable, private hideaway for relaxing and sleeping.

Twin Bed Cabins transform from a cosy lounge into a bedroom at nightfall. During the day, the lounge/bedroom area is set up with banquette-style seating and a seat, while in the evening (while you're enjoying dinner) your steward will diligently set up the room for bedtime, including making up the twin beds.

Bunk Bed Cabins are the most compact and bijou of all the accommodation available on the train. In the daytime, the lounge area is arranged with banquette seating, while in the evening (during dinner), your steward will reconfigure the space to make a bedroom with an upper and lower single-size berth.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the beautifully decorated, bright dining cars, of which there are two. Cuisine is typically Peruvian with menus incorporating fresh, seasonal dishes using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. The dishes are devised by the talented chefs at Belmond Hotel Monasterio in Cuzco, ensuring that the quality is of the typically high standard that the Belmond brand is renowned for, and are overseen on board by the creative chef, Diego Munoz.

Climate

Cuzco's climate is consistent, making it an optimal destination for a holiday throughout most of the year – if you don’t like too much heat. The hotter months are from October to April, with average temperatures of 11°C, and the coldest month is July at 7°C. The rainy season tends to be from November to April, however December can be a good time to visit despite this.

Gateway to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu (meaning ‘Old Mountain’ in Quechua) is positioned above the Urubamba River, giving sensational views of the valley below. Being one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is the main attraction for many people visiting Cuzco, with stone carved with impeccable precision to create many structures, from phenomenal temples to stone staircases. The 43-kilometre-long Inca Trail leads to Machu Picchu, and is Peru’s busiest trekking route, with hikers walking along the stone paved trail to reach the mountain, which is positioned far into the cloud forest.

History

Having previously been the capital of the Inca Empire (1438-1533), Cuzco is full of astonishing history, including one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu. Situated in the countryside, north west of the city, it had been a secret for hundreds of years, prior to Hiram Bingham’s rediscovery of the site. Río Urubamba Valley, otherwise known as Sacred Valley, encompasses 100 kilometres of land and is full of breathtaking Inca ruins.

Belmond has two incredible trains that travel through Cuzco. Belmond Hiram Bingham takes passengers from Cuzco to Machu Picchu in around three-and-a-half hours, allowing passengers to indulge in an incredible three-course meal en route. The second of Belmond’s trains is the superb Belmond Andean Explorer, offering a service from Cuzco to Puno (taking one day and night) or Arequipa from Cuzco (taking two days and two nights). The stunning sleeper train boast stylish cabins that allow passengers to relax, and there’s even an on-board spa for further indulgence.

Cuzco is perfect for visitors who have a passion for artefacts and artwork and wish to understand more about the history of the city, as the city boasts many museums. Museo de Arte Precolombino is full of archaeological artefacts, along with pre-Columbian artworks, some of which that have been taken from its parent museum in Lima. Planetarium Cuzco, located just 15 minutes away from downtown Cuzco, offers an ideal vantage point from which to see the stars and planets of the southern skies.

Since Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, its importance to modern Peru was signified by the city being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city shows off the Inca architecture in all its glory and was created to show the shape of a Puma lying down (the animal was worshipped by the Inca people). The buildings in the city have a unique appearance; created with large stones cemented with amalgam.
