Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage city steeped in fascinating history, dating back to the 1st century BC, when it fell under Roman rule and became an important trading link between Lisbon and Braga. At the time, the city was known as Cale (or Port of Cale), laying the foundations for the name, 'Portugal'. By the 1700s, wine produced in Douro Valley provided a crucial role in the economy and contributed to the growth of Porto, along with establishing good relations with the English. By 1717, the first trading post for Port wine was operating from Porto, with labels such as Taylor's and Graham's still popular brands to this day.
