Why Olakira Migration Camp is so special...

Safari

Due to its migration during the year, the camp offers access to the finest areas in the Serengeti for wildlife viewing, perfectly showcased on twice-daily game drives. Lion, cheetah, leopard, wildebeest and hyena can be spotted in both locations, with other species – including Nile crocodile, elephant and bat-eared fox – specific to where the camp is in the Serengeti.

Wildlife Encounters

The movement of the camp follows the famed Great Migration, a cycle during which millions of wildebeest, gazelles and zebra (pursued by their predators) embark on a 1,000-kilometre circuit in search of water. When in the north, the camp offers the opportunity to sight this breathtaking spectacle, watching as thousands of animals cross the rivers. The southerly location showcases a different side to the migration: calving season, when an estimated 500,000 calves are born during a three-week window in February, also drawing many predators to the area.

Culture & History

When the camp is in the northern Serengeti between June and November, there is the option to visit several villages and communities located on the outskirts of the national park. Learn more about the culture and way of life of the local Kuria people as you spend a morning visiting a school or bustling marketplace.

Wildlife

The vast Serengeti National Park covers an area of nearly 13,000 square kilometres and is home to resident populations of lion, cheetah, giraffe and elephant. Rhinoceros, zebra and gazelles can also be seen grazing on the open plains, whilst hippopotamus wallow in the rivers. With 500 recorded bird species, this is truly a wildlife paradise.  With the annual wildebeest and zebra migration passing through the park, it’s no wonder the Serengeti National Park is on most people’s bucket list.

Wildlife
The Great Migration

One of the most spectacular wildlife experiences in the world can be seen in the Serengeti National Park, when over two-million wildebeest and half-a-million zebra migrate across the plains, in search of nutritious grass shoots, following the annual rains. It’s hard to comprehend the sheer volume of animals until you witness first-hand the vast herds as far as the eye can see.
